Spring is here, time to get that garden going. There are many things you can do to ensure success. Here are a few hints:
(1) Check out companion planting. Many plants do better with plants they like. There are also plants that don’t get along.
Example: tomatoes like basil, chives and peppers. They do not like cabbage, broccoli or kale.
(2) Many plants can stand heat, but not New Mexico heat. Make sure your plants are shaded from the extreme afternoon heat. Plant where they will be in shade during the heat of the day or have a shade cover ready.
(3) Many kitchen items can help you with your gardening. Did you know, tomatoes need calcium? Throw your empty egg shells from breakfast in the garden next to your tomatoes. Potatoes, cucumber and beans like coffee grounds. Throw your used grounds around your plants.
(4) Pest control. Remember: what you put on your vegetables you end up eating. DO NOT USE a commercial pesticide. Something as simple as dish soap and vegetable oil in a spray bottle with water helps keep the little critters away.
(5) Buy a cheap bag of bird seed and sprinkle it away from your garden area. This helps keep the birds out of your garden.
Gardening is good for your health. Working with the soil has been proven to help lower blood pressure and anxiety.
Do your research and happy growing!!!!
